    Warehousing and fulfilment near Schiphol

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol handled 1.43 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, the fifth largest volume in Europe after Frankfurt, Istanbul, Paris and London Heathrow, with 56 percent on full freighters and 44 percent in the belly of passenger aircraft. The cargo area lies on the south-east side of the airport, next to the A4 and the A9, with the logistics parks of Schiphol-Rijk, Schiphol Logistics Park, Schiphol Trade Park in Hoofddorp, Fokker Logistics Park in Oude Meer and the Royal FloraHolland auction in Aalsmeer within a few kilometres, and the Port of Amsterdam 20 km to the north. The location suits high-value and time-critical goods that arrive by air, such as electronics, pharma, fashion and spare parts, forwarders that need bonded handling next to the airport, and e-commerce that ships to the Randstad. For the national picture, see Warehousing in the Netherlands.

    Recent requests for this region

A freight forwarder from a neighbouring country asked in September 2026 for a permanent subcontractor around Schiphol for bonded warehousing, air freight handling and onward road transport under the forwarder's own name. The brief covered 60 to 100 pallet positions with a dwell time of two to three days, around 200 pallets inbound a week, general air freight that is partly of medium to high value, T1 shipments, no ADR and no temperature control.

An Amsterdam-based B2B marketplace asked in March 2026 for a consolidation warehouse close to its office. The brief covered 2,500 to 4,000 inbound parcels a month from suppliers across Europe, 50 to 100 pallets a month, consolidation over 12 to 21 days and outbound shipments to large retail and brand buyers.

    Frequently asked questions

Does a warehouse near Schiphol have to be on the airport itself?

Only first-line handling, where aircraft are loaded and unloaded, sits on the airport. Forwarders and 3PLs with bonded status operate second-line warehouses in Schiphol-Rijk, Schiphol Logistics Park, Oude Meer and Hoofddorp, a few minutes from the handlers, and the customs procedures work from there. E-commerce fulfilment for the Randstad does not need the airport at all and is usually cheaper in Hoofddorp, Nieuw-Vennep, Zaandam or Alphen aan den Rijn, see Warehousing and e-commerce fulfilment in Amsterdam.

How does bonded storage work for air freight?

Goods that arrive from outside the EU can be moved under T1 from the handler to a bonded warehouse and stored there without paying duty and VAT until they are cleared or re-exported. Eighteen providers within 30 km list a bonded warehouse in the directory. When goods are cleared, an Article 23 licence defers the import VAT to the VAT return, see Fiscal representation and the Article 23 licence.

What does the labour market look like?

The Amsterdam region is the tightest labour market in the country. The UWV counted about 41,000 open vacancies on average in the first half of 2025 in Groot Amsterdam, three and a half times the number of short-term jobseekers, while employment in temp agencies and in transport and logistics was declining (UWV, Regio in Beeld Groot Amsterdam 2025). Warehouses around Schiphol rely on agency staff and labour migrants for peaks, and providers price the fourth quarter in as a handling surcharge in the order of 15 percent.

What is the difference with Rotterdam and Venlo?

Schiphol is the choice for goods that arrive or leave by air and for stock that has to reach Amsterdam and the Randstad the same day; Rotterdam for container flows and bonded storage of sea freight; Venlo and Tilburg-Waalwijk for pan-European distribution and Germany at lower rents. In the Logistiek.nl Logistieke Hotspots ranking 2025, Schiphol ranked eighth, Rotterdam Rijnmond-Drechtsteden ninth and Noord-Limburg third. See Warehousing and fulfilment in Rotterdam and Warehousing and fulfilment in Venlo.

What is the difference with Amsterdam?

Schiphol serves goods that arrive or leave by air and bonded handling next to the airport. Warehousing in Amsterdam itself, in Westpoort, Zuidoost, Zaandam or Almere, serves the city and the Randstad by road, e-commerce fulfilment and returns, and B2B distribution for brands with an office in the city, and has to deal with the zero-emission zone inside the S100 ring. See Warehousing and e-commerce fulfilment in Amsterdam.
